This is a new(ish) series, one of the first I've actually had the patience and love with which to keep working at, at length anyway. Tthe interchanges are the devices of modern man, they, as with the highway system itself, divide, organize, and expedite the travelers who pass under their steel and concrete trusses, choosing one dedicated path and going forth to continue for whatever purpose or motivation is within them. Scot Ritchie

Scot is an award winning illustrator who has been drawing ever since he could hold a crayon. These days he works digitally and has been hired by editors and art directors from around the world.

He's equally at home with Advertising, Editorial, Map or Educational work. His children's books have been translated into Korean, Dutch, French and Polish. To date he has illustrated 33 books and is now an author with the release of "Up Up and Away."

Scot loves to travel and has been able to pack up his laptop and work from London, Berlin and Hawaii. He now lives in one of the most beautiful cities in the world, just a stones throw from the ocean.

As much as Nicolle loves DC, she still thinks of herself as a "west-coaster," having grown up in Washington state in the picturesque town of Bellingham, WA, 1.5 hours north of Seattle. Nicolle got her BA in biochemistry from Lewis and Clark college in Portland Oregon, with a side trip to Kenya for a semester abroad. All this time, she studied science with an eye toward medical school, or perhaps graduate study--dabbling in the art world on the side..

Out of college Nicolle had the good fortune to work in Dr. Ullman's laboratory at Oregon Health Sciences where she studied tropical parasites like leshminiasis, african sleeping sickness and malaria. Not only did it

help prepare her thinking about how to display scientific information, it led her to the realization that she liked learning about scientific outcomes and results, had a profound respect for the people who had the dedication to get those results, but wasn't fulfilled herself doing the daily lab work.

After learning the humility of the lab – troubleshooting PCR reactions and perfecting microscopy images – Nicolle stumbled on the UC Santa Cruz Science Illustration program where her dual interests in art and science finally came together. Since leaving UC Santa Cruz, Nicolle has worked at the Stanford Linear Accelerator, then the National Science Foundation. During this time she started Sayo-Art LLC to meet the demands of outside clients. In 2007 she committed to Sayo-Art LLC full time. She just finished Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species, a graphic adaptation, with writer Mike Keller, to be published in October 2009 with Rodale. She continues to enjoy working with a diverse group of other clients.

I chose to feature Wade's technical drawings because the reminded me of the diagrammatic textbook style of Josh Keyes. While not nearly as hevy in concept and thrown out of context, their handling of volume, light, and space fascinate me. The possibilities for this style, to me, seem rather endless, and I would imagine, perpetually challenging to continue diagramming a countless variety of "stuff". I wish he would do something more conceptual with these, but they're gorgeous nonetheless.

"I originally come from Hyde, near Manchester, A small town made famous by Cotton Mills, Ricky Hatton and Serial Killers. I am currently based in Wolverhampton. I was a printer for quite a few years before leaving and doing what I wanted to do which was always going to be art based in some way. As a kid I loved to draw, paint and spent many hours making model kits and painting miniature figures. This was also where my long time interest in dinosaurs began, making some rather strange looking and very inaccurate model kits of them. I think this also gave me an appreciation for both 2D and 3D work. Having completed a degree in 3D design ceramics I worked for several years as a web designer (something I fell into completely by accident) where I realised how useful the computer had become in the production of artwork. I now use 2D and 3D in this virtual world. I suppose my work now falls into two main areas. 3D visual work for such things as exhibition design, set design and architectural visualisation and the more traditional illustration which can cover just about anything really (though my love of dinosaurs and all things prehistoric seems to be taking over that section). you can also add to this a smidgen of graphic design, web design and logo creation. For now I'm continuing to improve my technique and 3D modelling skills. There is also a growing urge to do some traditional painting and drawing again when time allows. Above all I would like just to continue doing what I enjoy doing (and get paid for it!)."

Zucca's illustrations center heavily around law enforcement, crime, police officers/detectives, mug shots, etc. One could almost say, he's using a 'cops and robbers' angle in his work. But if this is true, he's handling it in quite a clever way, offering up (in)famous faces in trouble with the law and caught on a bad day. Some of the compositions are reminiscent of movies or tv shows about cops, fictionalized or the stuff headline news is made of.

Most of the work displayed here springs from the music that the work is about. It is my intention to illustrate the music. The way it sounds, where it comes from, and what it is about. If you are a fan of the music, I hope the poster suprizes you and at the same time feels like a nice fit.

My linework tends to have a bold carved feel and I generally work with three to five flat colors that, at least visually, translate to screen printing.

I grew up on the country side of northern Germany in the land between the oceans. Fascinated by nature as well as technology I enjoy everything from painting to sculpting. In 2009 I graduated from the school of art and design in Kassel although currently I am still enrolled there as a master student.

My personal artwork focuses on the influence of technology on humanity and its immediate surroundings. The newest projects consist of sculpting, molding and producing my own resin toys in limited editions. My works have been exhibited around the globe in various galleries.

Let's see… I think it's about that time.
A bit about me. My Dad started drag racing in 1970. I was born in June, 1973. From the time I can remember, my Dad was taking the family to the drag races. For those that remember it, Orange County Raceway was always my personal favorite. So I guess it's safe to say the bulk of my influences in art come from being raised around cars, pinstriping and pretty girls bearing "Miss" titles (Miss Winston, Miss Hurst Shifter). Thanks Dad!
I love old advertising, and am influenced by antiques, lingerie, toys, and good ol' rock & roll. I started reading and collecting MAD Magazine in the sixth grade. Love the wit and wisdom of Dr. Suess, Shel Silverstein, Jim Henson. I am astounded by Gil Elvgrin, Egon Schiele, Ed Roth, and whoever invented Spongebob Squarepants….. and beer.
I enjoy good friends, good times, good karaoke and watching those real life trauma shows on TLC. I dream in color. I weld. My favorite color is lime green. I'm dying to get a Pug dog and name him "SeaBiscuit".
I graduated with honors from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, Ca. I have a lot of fun making art. It's a pretty cool gig. My name is Maggy. I’m an artist living in Columbus, Ohio, but farm raised in Morrow County, Ohio.
I focus on animals and nature, as you can plainly see. I’ve always been an outdoorsy and artsy
person. It felt best to combine the two. Working in mostly ink and some watercolor,I also love doing line
art with limited, solid colors. I also have an affection for retro furniture and vintage campers, as well
as my first love, horses.
I gained my education from the Columbus College of Art and Design with a focus in Illustration
and a writing minor. There are self-taught artists out there that do great work, but I myself wouldn’t
be doing the caliber of work I make today without choosing to get a professinal education.

I'm a young, fresh and vibrant illustrator from Hertfordshire with a First Class Honours degree in Graphic Design & Illustration (I'm also an over-organised, neat-freak, perfectionist: luckily for me these attributes are quite useful as a freelance illustrator).

My contemporary style is a mix of concept, hand drawn line art and Photoshop. In 2009, I exhibited at D&AD New Blood Exhibition and was also featured in the Computer Arts Graduate Showcase Magazine, which presents "The world's hottest new design graduates".

When I'm not illustrating, I drink coffees and read lots of interesting books, mostly on food and Japan (sometimes even on food from Japan).

I was born in vale of leven near loch lomond. I am a graduate of Manchester Metropolitan University where I undertook a course in illustration with animation. I recently went self employed as an artist. I produce various styles of art such as sculpture, painting, drawing and water based screenprinting. I have recently began to experiment with creative computer programmes such as photoshop and illustrator.

VERONICA LAWLOR’s romantically inclined reportage drawings have led her around the world, including a major reportage of Italy and portrait of Pope John Paul II. On this side of the Atlantic she has travelled across the United States drawing icons of America for Brooks Brothers 185th anniversary campaign and has completed reportage assignments for numerous clients including 3M Corporation and the Hyatt hotel chain. In 2002 she documented VaxGen’s quest to create an AIDS vaccine for the companies annual report. The only artist to draw, on the spot, the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center, her work is featured in the Newseum, the Washington DC museum of journalism; the drawings were also exhibited at the New York City Fire Museum. Veronica’s drawings and silk paintings on issues of world hunger were exhibited at the United Nations World Food Summit in Rome. Her fashion work includes advertising for Lord & Taylor and a series of hand printed “art-to-wear” garments. Ms. Lawlor’s work has appeared in numerous publications and her picture book, I Was Dreaming to Come to America: Memories of the Ellis Island Oral History Project (Viking) was honored by the National Council for Social Studies, and exhibited in Washington DC. She has also shown her work at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Puck Gallery, Gallery 1482, the Society of Illustrators, the Rx Club and the Ellis Island Museum of Immigration.

Veronica Lawlor is currently on the faculty of Pratt Institute and Parsons School of Design, and conducts private reportage workshops worldwide. She is a graduate of Parsons School of Design (BFA) and the New School (MA). Additionally Veronica studied with (and later had the honor of teaching with) the late David J. Passalacqua. More recently she is the co-founder of the Dalvero Academy. Veronica’s work for 3M was featured in an article by Lisa Cyr on reportage in theCommunication Arts 2007 Illustration Annual, and she was interviewed in an article about reportage written by Gabi Campanario in the World Association of Newspapers annual report 2009.

"I was born in 1985, in Coggeshall, England.

I'm a graduate of Balliol College, Oxford University. I like books, biscuits, trees, sunshine, rock & roll, making jam (not a euphemism), finding things down the back of the sofa, and getting lost in strange places.

I also like drawing strange things.

I'm a freelance illustrator (amongst other things), combining vintage imagery and a literary sensibility with a surreal sense of fun. Probably. Taking inspiration from all sorts of old junk, and an interest in just about everything, my work revolves around humour, stories, and general weirdness.

Webster has illustrated for most major publications in the United States, and his artwork has appeared on beer bottles, music posters, billboards, apparel, buildings, banners, doughnut boxes, magnets and buttons, menuboards, wine bottles and wine glasses, people's skin, book covers, and even in the form of a giant corn maze.

He was born in New York but spent his youth overseas in Pakistan, Singapore, Cyprus and Taiwan, thanks to his parents' sense of adventure and overseas teaching jobs. While in college, he was awarded a full fellowship from Yale University for study in their prestigious Norfolk art program, and in 1996, he was awarded a scholarship to study drawing, painting, printmaking and sculpture in Rennes, France, at the University of Rennes II.

In addition to receiving honors from The Society of Illustrators, Communication Arts, Print, HOW, Graphis and the AIGA, Kyle created the beloved (and ridiculous) viral video, Original Design Gangsta, in 2006. The follow-up has been recorded and the video will air in late 2009. He also created and maintains the popular Daily Figure website.

Kyle is currently working on three comic book projects, an amazing iPhone game, numerous logos, and many, many magazine, book, and advertising illustrations. He is also an instructor at High Point University, teaching a digital art course. This pile of work makes him very happy, but not as happy as his two German princesses.

Fun Facts: Kyle is fluent in French, has trained for six months with a world-class card magician, is an advanced origami folder, plays too much tennis, was married in Italy, has ridden a camel, is obsessed with Tintin, and he does a spot-on Mickey Mouse impression.

Alex Gross born August 30, 1968 is a visual artist currently working in Los Angeles, California. He specializes in oil paintings on canvas whose themes include globalization, commerce, great beauty, dark mayhem, and the remorseless passage of time.

Alex graduated in 1990 from Art Center College of Design, in Pasadena, California. Since then, he has become established as an artist in the Pop Surrealism movement.

In the year 2000, he received a fellowship from the Japan Foundation. He spent two months traveling throughout Japan, researching and collecting a wide variety of Japanese Fine and Commercial art, as research for his own artwork. Part of his collection was compiled and published by Taschen under the title Japanese Beauties in 2004.

In 2007, Chronicle books published The Art of Alex Gross, a monograph featuring Alex's painting, drawing and printmaking from 1999 through 2007. Science Fiction author Bruce Sterling penned the introduction to the book. His art has been featured in numerous publications including the book Pop Surrealism, Juxtapoz, Los Angeles Magazine, Communication Arts, Taiwanese magazine XFUNS, and The Los Angeles Times.

In August, 2007. California State Fullerton's Grand Central Art Center hosted a retrospective museum show featuring an array of Alex's work from different periods throughout his career. In a review of the museum show, the Orange County Register wrote that "Gross' work is highly representational and, unlike many of his contemporaries lumped into the so-called low-brow art niche, he is an excellent draftsman. He also demands that one know a bit about world culture, history and politics and have the wit to appreciate his sense of irony."

His work was also featured in the Laguna Art Museum's exhibition and catalogue "In the land of Retinal Delights", in July, 2008. His work has been featured on the cover of the band Blonde Redhead's album 32, as well as on the cover of the paperback version of "After Dark", the national bestseller by Haruki Murakami published by Vintage Books.

Alex currently exhibits at the Jonathan Levine Gallery in New York.

Carson Ellis

Carson Ellis was born in 1975 in Vancouver, Canada. She was raised in suburban New York and college-educated at the Univeristy of Montana in Missoula, where she earned a BFA in Painting in 1998.

She was a bartender and an oil painter when, in 2001, her now husband, Colin Meloy, put her to work making art for The Decemberists. What started as a small project undertaken in her spare time quickly developed into a big job. As the band’s illustrator-in-residence, she has created flyers and posters, website illustrations, t-shirt designs, backdrop and stage set designs, video props, and, all told, 18 record covers.

Happily, all this work led her to a career in illustration. These days she mostly divides her time between children’s book illustration, artwork for the Decemberists, and, once in a great while, fine art for exhibiting.

Blanchet's work is graphic at best, and utilizes negative space in a brilliant way. And through the use of computer manipulation coupled with an old school collage approach to alot of the work, Blanchet makes use of text, cut up and re-assembled pictures, and graphic features to re-create a nostalgic feel that brings us back to the designers and periodical layouts of the 1950s, with vibrant colors, flat plains of color, marked with minimal lines. I really enjoy the 'cut-out' quality of Blanchet's poster, book cover, and album cover design, with photos, graphic features, and text all working together "retro"-actively. Franklin's technical illustrations are extremely realistic and well-rendered in Photoshop, and many look traditional in their handling, which i find impressive. The architectural pieces specifically are functional in two ways: one is historical and structural accuracy presented so that the viewer can look into the past, and the other is cut-away views of buildings in order to illustrate the inner-workings and make-up of the given structure. He was born in Swindon, Wiltshire, in 1962, and was influenced by the illustrations in his books and comics, specialised in technical subjects. Joining the prestigious School of Technical Illustration at Bournemouth & Poole College of Art & Design in 1981, Mark was introduced to the Photo-Realist movement in Pop Art. Influenced by Philip Castle and Michael English, amongst others, he mastered the art of airbrush illustration, along with the exacting geometry of perspective theory. Graduating in 1985, Mark moved to London to work as a freelance illustrator. A surprisingly smooth transition from airbrush to digital art means that he has been providing a reliable and cost-effective service to a variety of media, print, publishing and advertising clients for over twenty years.

Born and raised in Northern New Jersey Jim Hatch's loves included drawing and riding motorcycles. These passions soon turned into a career. What is clear is his ability to communicate instructions and present steps in a process rather easily. Working out of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada the illustrator's style is painterly, with obvious, but beautiful strokes of paint in each inch of her pieces. Her works are reminiscent of the era of the late 19th century and the dawn of the 20th, and evoke, at least for me, the spirit of Edward Hopper and other pupils that came after the ash can school of New York. The subject matter she deals with are mostly about people in daily life, yet some of her pieces are metaphorical and symbolic, making her work fun to look at, and not always about paint on the canvas. Born in Helsinki, Finland in the late 70s, Posti spent his boyhood drawing pictures, rather than playing with his friends. These days his freelance work, as well as the variety of his subject matter seems to indicate that this time spent drawing, not playing, has served him well. His work is of a playful nature, and his ink-like lines are energetic and youthful, often contouring and defining elements that are then fleshed-out with bold and vibrant plains of color. His subject matter also ranges from child-like, fantastic situations, to mutant-like creatures, to the slightly erotic. Posti works in both traditional materials, and computer format, and is often combining the two.

The illustrators I have chosen, to me, seem to speak about the conversations and considerations I have talked about in class, and the works that are shown here are examples of the things I like to do with my own work, and perhaps even possibilities for directions I may take in the near future. Whatever the case, I feel that these artists and their work are really inspiring, and if you know me, and what I like to do in my work sometimes, I think you'll be able to see why.

Paul Thurlby

In reference to my dilemmas with my handling of people(whether self-fabricated or otherwise), Thurlby's approach seems rather playful, caricature-like, and does not appear to take itself super-seriously. His packaging is simple, yet highlights precisely, the place in which his talent lies: people. His style is reminiscent of cut-paper, and that's yet another feature of his work that appeals to me as an illustrator.

Lou Lou & Tummie

The handling of cityscapes and with a love of all things urban, my passion lies in the lines of the city. So it's not a surprise that Lou Lou & Tummie's postcard design caught my eye. I really enjoy the manipulation of the street layout as text, the cartoonish handling of the landscape, as well as the bold yet strangely pleasing color scheme.

Rod Hunt

The Majority of Hunt's work is in an isometric layout, many times with a bird's eye view of a microcosm of animated life, often scenes of whole city blocks, intersections, building cut-aways, etc. However this promotional card is a great example of the smooth coloring, playful content, and impressive technical detail that all of his work contains. Besides, there's nothing better than robots and girls.

Christine Berrie

Ok, now when I stumbled upon this girl, I couldn't believe what I was seeing, and i just kept looking. Her pieces are incredibly technically accurate, and that's the kind of thing I drool over. The subject matter she deals with range from old cameras, mopeds, architecture, and various machines. The realism in her work, along with her attention to detail are refreshing, considering great deal of work coming from emerging illustrators right now, is often cartoon-like in it's simplicity, while Ms. Berries work is a bit more 'mature' in it's approach.

Rosemary Travale

This is what I mean when I talk about being, "cartoon-like in it's simplicity" ...It isn't always necessarily a bad thing. Rosemary Travale's work is simple, but at the same time very charming and elegant in it's execution. Her line work is indicative, and seems to flow at times, rather thick. Yet it can also be thin and descriptive. Whichever it becomes at any given time, it is as energetic as her color choices. Here we see a business card, and small graphic cards and prints all designed by her, and containing brilliant examples of the variety of ideas and content featured in her work.

some images i've prepared for my visual essay piece, the final two of the five should be up in the morning sometime.

the piece is about steroid use in the MLB, and its effects on the game in terms of honor, and pride as "America's Pastime".

this will be reflected in the style of baseball trading cards, like the ones i had in my possession as a young boy. In these cards, i'm thinking that the steroid allusion may not necessarily be overt, but will be implied.

If you were starting your own magazine and your livelihood depended on it selling well and your sanity depended on it being something you wanted to spend all your time on, what would it be? What sorts of writers and artists and writers would you hire? What subject matter would you deal with? How would you want it to look?

I would want the magazine i started to focus on the emerging artists and writers coming out of college and design schools right now (2008-09/10...and beyond). Specifically focused on those artists coming out of the mid and southwest, because i feel that almost too much emphasis is put on the students coming out of the west and east coast, and not enough attention is paid to those kids coming out of the bread basket and bible belt states, and i think its time for a shift. I would hire writers and artists whose work i could get fired-up about, and whose ideas i could get behind with all my belief. I think those kids who get hardly any exposure, have some of the purest ideas. those ideas and beliefs who are untouched by anyone, but art teachers. And i would also hire those who had come straight out of art college and design schools, simply due to the work they have all put in to get to the point they have reached, and the goals they have had to realize for young artists as themselves.

I would deal with the subject matter of today, tomorrow and further beyond our generational reach reach, the things we have thought about, and those things we have yet to consider. And i want it to resemble something of Juxtapoz Magazine, with its emerging artists and recognizable figures representing something that every modern artist emulates and strives for in todays world. They feature everything from the up-and-coming, to the recognizable, yet unknown (Stanley Donwood), and i want to include everyone i can who has inspired me from the get-go: through High School, to my emergence from College.

Describe your typical creative process, from getting an assignment to finished piece.

-I sketch first initial ideas

-thumbnails come next

-larger, more refined thumbnails come after i have selected two or three i like most.

-i sketch and layout exactly what i think the composition should be, i determine what i think is or is not working within this, and all of this is done at around 8x10 (however sometimes, i scan the thumbnails and re-draw them, if i feel i'll only hurt the composition by re-drawing it without guidance.)

-once the final sketch is laid out, whatever medium i've selected dictates how i go from there: if its ink, i test line thickness, and decide what kind of lines i want and where, if its conte or charcoal, i start shading and knocking in basic forms, and so on.

-Lately, scanning has become almost a requirement for me, as i don't move the actual piece around everywhere, and i like to see how the work reproduces. So i scan, sometimes tweak colors and light balance, and print.

Describe what your creative process should be like.

Using the process i have listed above, the things that i would alter include:

-more thumbnails (as i tend to get impatient with them, and always think i have the composition down the way i want it after about 15 or 20.)

-going over the larger thumbnails i pick out, and fine-tuning them more before i even start the final thing.

-and remaining vigilant of when something is too much, and when it is not enough.

Research of a professional creator's creative process: Stanley Kubrick

-He reportedly exposed 1.3 million feet of film while shooting The Shining (1980), the release print of which runs for 142 minutes. Thus, he used less than 1% of the exposed film stock, making his shooting ratio an indulgent 102:1 when a ration of 5 or 10:1 is considered the norm.

-Known for making his actors and crew make up to 120+ takes consecutively.

-Kubrick took charge of many projects, almost completely, imposing his ideas and standards on the film. Many crew members were upset by his style: cinematographer Russell Metty complained to producers that Kubrick was taking over his job. Kubrick's reponse was to tell him to sit there and do nothing. Metty complied, and ironically was awarded the Academy Award for his cinematography.

Of the artwork you have done, what is your personal favorite piece? Why do you like it?

My favorite piece, or at least one close to the top of the heap is a cut-paper/ink pen piece I did for IPC in freshman year, using an abandoned building i had previously made work about earlier in that same semester. It's my favorite i think because of the thinking and theory behind it. It dealt with the creative process, especially in that class, as well as creating a parallel between this process and mankind's ability to abandon structures carefully built and considered for a specific purpose. It means alot to me, and how i work as an illustrator.

What piece do other people like most? Do you agree? Why do you think they like it?

Other people's favorite piece would have to be the scratchboard piece of the whale and ship from the story, Sinbad and the Seven Voyages, I did in Illustration 2. I mean, as far as craft goes, its perhaps one of my best, and it is one of my favorites, but I still have technical problems with it. It's intricate, and there are nice features, and i think perhaps that's why people like it.

What piece surprised you the most?

I think the letter 'B', a photo i shot for a found typography exercise in Design 01, along with the rest of the alphabet i captured surprised me, because as i did the assignment, i began to look beyond just getting all the letters of the alphabet themselves in a collection, and i began to look into each letter as their own single entities, and i found that to be rather beautiful with some characters, namely the 'B'.

How has the work of your peers influenced you and your work?

-Many times I have found myself saying, "man I wish I could do that", or "I wish I could make things look that way." This was almost to the point of frustration at times, because I felt like my work didn't have the quality and consideration that was required to make me a successful artist, specifically an illustrator. However holding my own work up to the work of my peers has also given me confidence and reassurance, especially when I find myself in the mindset that, "I can do that too". It has also pushed me into exploring new media as well as pushing the detail and complexity of my work. And I've been been warned many times against developing my own 'style', but I do believe that the forming of my own style would make me confident in the work I produce, maybe not, I can't be certain.

What sort of subject matter do you like to create work about?

What kind of music do you like? Why?

-Alt. Rock (what i gew up on, and went through puberty with)

-Progressive/Experimental Rock (something i began to like in High School, the medium is free and follows a specific structure even when it seems like ti doesn't)

-Classical (it's relaxing, and it's almost a window to another time and place that i will probably never understand, but nonetheless it has always fascinated me with it's beauty and complexity)

-(some) Hip-Hop (It's upbeat, motivating, and i like the fact that it doesn't always take itself so seriously)

-Blues Rock (it's raw and unbridled, andbeing from the south, i'm used to the blues, this just kicks it up a notch.)

-Garage Rock (once again, its raw, and powerful, and alot of times it's a bunch of kids peeling the paint off the walls of someone's living room...good stuff)

-Old School Punk (something from my high school days, it always inspired me to go against the grain, and to not do what everyone else was doing, and I think that's infinitely valuable.)

-Classic Rock (cheesy at times, but still fun, and i've always heard it, so it's been a part of my life)

-Surf (this is thanks to Remy Miller, who introduced me to the likes of Dick Dale, Link Wray and others... it sounds cool, and it emphasizes the electric guitar, plus it's another time and place yet again.)
